Sustainable Procurement

Sustainable Procurement That Creates Economic Social & Environmental Benefit

Sustainability is more than environmental and social impact - it’s also about delivering long-term economic value for the business and its stakeholders. I embed sustainability into procurement as a commercial lever for strategic advantage, not a tick-box exercise.

What I Do

I recognise that suppliers are at different stages of maturity, with varying appetite and resources for sustainability initiatives. That’s why I take a pragmatic, collaborative approach - balancing ambition with commercial reality.

I build on five principles for sustainable & commercial success:

Strategic Sourcing

Supplier Partnerships

Total cost of ownership (TCO)

Operational resilience

Stakeholder Trust

What I Deliver

Energy and Resources

Energy Efficiency & Decarbonisation: Championed a 3-tier energy strategy covering procurement, operational controls, and energy technology. Sourced and assessed the ROI for solar, voltage optimisation, biofuels, and smart hot water tanks, and introduced PowerBI dashboards to strengthen operational control. Through test-and-learn pilots, we evaluated TCO, resilience, and stakeholder trust for scaling up. Delivered a 10% reduction in electricity use and 20% carbon savings, with ROI ranging from 1–4 years.

Water Management: Sourced smart water technologies and engaged a new strategic partner who secured local grants. Delivered a 10% reduction in consumption with ROI under 1.5 years.

Waste Reduction: By partnering with our waste supplier and operations teams, we achieved 80% diversion from landfill; and my team introduced new bedding and packaging solutions to reduce waste for our accommodation teams.

Fleet Decarbonisation: Developed and secured finance for a greener fleet strategy, transitioning an 800+ vehicle fleet to more efficient, lower-carbon options.

Food

Food Standards: Mandated category teams to establish robust sourcing standards e.g. MSC certification and Red Tractor.

Food Authenticity & Safety: Collaborated with Safety and Operations teams to introduce authenticity checks during the horsemeat scandal and to implement allergen controls, building both resilience and stakeholder trust.

Food Sustainability: Together with my team and internal stakeholders we collaborated with our food distribution partner to establish sourcing strategies and operational controls that secured supply despite macroeconomic disruption.

Built Environment & FM

Operational Resilience: Partnered with Safety, Legal, and Operations to create a vendor due diligence framework, ensuring contractors carried the necessary accreditations, insurance, and operational controls to safeguard sites and comply with regulation.

Sustainable procurement isn’t just good practice - it’s smart business and builds strategic advantage.
